Department of Chinese Studies

Chinese is one of the most widely spoken language in the world, about one-fifth of the world’s population speak some form of Chinese as their native language. Chinese is also one of the official languages of the United Nations, which makes it an important language in the International arena.

The roots of Chinese script go back more than 3,500 years when major events were recorded on bones and tortoise shells. From then, Chinese language has evolved through history and today, the language we know and speak as Chinese is the Standard or Modern Chinese (Putonghua) also called Mandarin, which is the official language of the PRC. Chinese language is different from other languages because it is a pictorial and tonal language. The written script is aesthetically beautiful with every “character” depicting a meaning. Learning Chinese language thus becomes a very interesting and enriching experience.

China and India being home to two of the oldest civilizations in the world and also neighbouring countries, share a long history of cultural exchange and friendship. Who can forget the name of Chinese Buddhist monk like Xuan Zang who helped forge strong ties between these two powerful and culturally rich ancient nations?

In the past few decades China has emerged as an economic power and being our neighbor it becomes all the more important to understand China. Learning Chinese can open a whole world of opportunities. At present, Chinese is being taught in at least 7, 8 universities across the country. Department of Chinese Studies, Doon University has made a name for itself in the past five years since it started offering MA Integrated course in Chinese in 2010. The students are taught a well designed curriculum which is regularly updated and have components of language, literature, culture and history. Students have an option of leaving the course after graduation and there is also an option of lateral entry at MA level through an entrance exam. The Department offers Elective Courses titled “India-China Relations through history and “Modern Chinese Literature” to students of other Departments in School of Languages. The Department also offers ‘One Year Certificate Course in Chinese’.

The department frequently organizes academic and cultural activities. Students are encouraged to carry out original research and participate in all the academic lectures, seminars and workshops that are conducted on various topics of their interest. Department boasts of many renowned scholars in the field of China Studies like Prof B.R.Deepak, Dr. Hemant Adlakha, Prof Priyadarsi Mukherjee, and Prof. Anita Sharma who have been associated with the Department. The Department was also visited by foreign dignitaries from Embassy of China and Taiwan Economic and Cultural Council. Chinese festivals are celebrated through an array of academic and cultural activities to enhance the cultural understanding of the students and to experience the culture of country.

The fast growth of Chinese economy has put China in a very strong position in the international arena. In the era of globalisation, with the growth and development in Sino-Indian relations, the scope and demand of Chinese language experts is increasing every day. Our students have been placed in multinational companies and have been awarded fellowships to study in China. The craze for learning Chinese language or what is called in Chinese “中文热” that swept the country and the world in the past few decades is still burning strong.

The Department of Chinese Studies aims to develop as one of the major centres for Chinese Studies in India. The students are provided with sound infrastructure and a rich academic environment that aims at their overall development. The emphasis on the classroom teaching and interactions with the students is accompanied with lectures and workshops by eminent scholars to provide the students with academic exposure.

The Department of Chinese Studies was among the first three departments to be established in School of Languages and has already witnessed one batch of MA students and three batches of BA pass out with Masters and Bachelor (Honours) degrees respectively. The students have all landed with attractive employment offers and have added to the name of the Department.

1. Courses offered by the Department:

The Department offers wide range of courses focusing on developing the linguistic ability and cultural competence in the Bachelor Program. The Masters is aimed at inculcating in students the research ability and offers more specialized courses. The Masters program of the department boasts of varied courses which are offered as per the demands and requirements of the time. The students of Bachelor Program are also expected to do General and Elective Courses.
